What is a Lumen and how is it calculated?

Brillianz Electronic Systems has Brillianz Electronic Systems has a passion to help anyone understand further lighting terminology. With that in mind please find the explanation on Lumen. What is a Lumen? and how is it calculated...
Luminous flux (or Lumens) is the measure of the perceived power of light. It differs from radiant flux,
the measure of the total power of light emitted, in that luminous flux is adjusted to reflect the varying
sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light. One lumen is defined as the luminous
flux of light produced by a light source that emits one candela of luminous intensity over a solid angle
of one steradian. A common candle emits light with a luminous intensity of roughly one candela but
there is a more technically sound definition.
